LOCATION OF THE TEMPLE: Thingalur is on the way from Thiruvaiyaru to Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District of Tamilnadu State, India. It is around 25 Kms away from Thanjavur in the North direction.

HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE: As chandran (moon) was very much handsome and legible, Daksha Prajapathi gave all his 27 daughters (Stars) in marriage to him.

Instead of treating all of them alike, he neglected all the other 26 wives and spent most of his time with Rohini . Daksha Prajapathi advised Chandran to treat all his 27 wives equally. But Chandran ignored him. Daksha Prajapathi got offended and cursed Chandran that he should suffer from a wasting disease.
Chandran prayed to Lord Siva in Thingalur to save him from the curse. Saving him God ordered that Chandran should remain in the temple in Thingalur and should give relief to those, suffering from the ill effects of Chandran’s adverse placement in their horoscopes and offering prayers to him. So, such people who are affected by the adverse positions of Chandran in their horoscopes offer prayers to Lord Kailasanathar, Goddess Sri Periyanayaki and Chandra Bagavan (moon God), by offering prayers.

DIVINESS OF THE TEMPLE:The lives of this Universe are controlled by the movements of the nine planets in the universe and by the positions occupied them in the natal charts according to the time of their births. Lord Chandran is the Lord of mind; He is also the Lord of herbs. When Chandra Bagavan is well placed in the Native’s chart, the native will be a great man with the gift of clear thinking ability. When the full moon day occurs on Monday, it is very auspicious to offer prayer to Chandra Bagavan. Thingal , in Tamil, refers to moon (Chandran). So this place is called Thingalur. It is believed that no one has died of snakebite in this place.

AUSPICIOUS TIMES: In the Tamil month of Panguni (March - April) on the full moon day (Pournami) , the day before and on the succeeding day (3 days), the rays of the rising moon fall on Lord Siva (Kailasanathar). Arathi is shown to God Siva. This rare phenomenon occurs only in Thingalur and not anywhere else. Poojas performed on Full moon days and every Mondays are very special in this temple.

POOJAS TO BE PERFORMED FOR: To ward off the ill effects of the adversely placed Chandran in the native’s chart, at least partially, if not fully, the native is advised to perform pooja at Thingalur. To take bath in the Chandra pushkarani and to offer prayers to Lord Kailasanathar, Goddess Periyanayaki and then to Chandra Bagavan.The people with Chandra dhosham can get relief and their sufferings even though not completely but at least get minimized to a great extent, by performing pooja in this place and offering rayers to Lord Siva, Goddess Periyanayaki and to Chandra Bagavan.

POOJA OFFERINGS: Chandra Bagavan whose dress is white and as his grains were paddy and raw rice. He has to be offered with raw rice pudding mixed with jaggery, white flowers (White Arali) and white clothing. It is believed that this pooja will remove obstacles in one’s life.
