The ninth day is also celebrated as Ayudha pooja. On this day, the Hindus pay respect to all the tools they use at work or home such as scissors, knives and pliers.
 Two important rituals observed throughout the nine days are the kalasam and the golu. A kalasam is a silver pot filled with rice and decorated with kumkum (or red powder) and turmeric. Mango leaves and a coconut, covered in turmeric, are placed on top of the silver pot. The kalasam represents the goddesses and is worshipped over the nine days. Another ceremony is the golu where all kinds of traditional dolls and statues of deities are arranged in a 3 to 9- step platform.
 During the nine days, different types of food are prepared and served. Young girls and women are invited and presented with sari blouse pieces, small mirrors, combs and kumkum containers.
 The tenth night is also celebrated to mark the killing of the evil demon-king, Mahishasura, by Goddess Durga. In some parts of India, the tenth day celebrates the vanquishing of the evil king Ravana by Lord Rama. Songs and traditional dances are performed to celebrate this joyous occasion.
